When do graduate schemes open? Deadlines for 2027 entry

Most UK graduate schemes open for applications in September or October, about a year before they start, and many close between November and early January. Some employers review applications as they arrive and close once they have enough candidates, so apply in the autumn rather than waiting for the published deadline. If you have missed the main window, it is not too late: some schemes have January intakes, and some employers recruit all year round.

When do graduate schemes open?#

For schemes starting in 2027, Prospects says most accept applications from September or October 2026 and usually keep them open until the end of the year or early January. It also warns that some organisations fill places as they go and close once they are full.

A typical recruitment year for a 2027 start looks like this:

• Late August to October 2026: spring insight programmes for first-year students open in late August or early September, according to Warwick Business School, and most graduate schemes open in September or October.
• October 2026 to early 2027: online tests, video interviews and other early assessments.
• October to November 2026: the first closing dates. The NHS Graduate Management Training Scheme closes on 28 October.
• December 2026 to early January 2027: many schemes close, and so do most spring weeks.
• January to March 2027: assessment centres and final interviews, and some employers start making offers. Prospects says many summer internship deadlines also fall in this period.
• Spring to summer 2027: offers are made and accepted.
• July to October 2027: most schemes start, although start dates vary and some programmes also have January intakes.

When people search for “graduate schemes 2027”, they mean schemes that start in 2027, and these are the ones open now. If you are looking for 2026 deadlines, most schemes that started in 2026 closed last autumn. The Civil Service Fast Stream’s window for 2026 entry, for example, ran from midday on 9 October to midday on 6 November 2025, according to its how to apply page.

What are the deadlines for 2027 graduate schemes?#

Here is what some well-known employers’ own pages said when we checked them on 27 September 2026.

Dates and rules change every year, and employers can close early without much notice. Always check the employer’s own careers page before you plan around a date. Where an employer offers it, register your interest so you hear as soon as applications open. The Fast Stream, for example, has a “register your interest” link on its site.

Why does applying early matter?#

Because of rolling recruitment. Prospects explains that some organisations assess applications and make offers on a rolling basis, filling places as they go and closing once they are full. When an employer works this way, a published closing date is the last possible day, not a target.

A few other reasons to start early:

• Some deadlines come quickly. The NHS scheme closes in October, and last year the Fast Stream’s window was open for just four weeks.
• The stages follow fast. Teach First, for example, says it sends an online assessment one working day after you apply, which you then have five days to complete. At other employers, online tests and video interviews can also follow soon after you apply, so leave time for them. Our guide to graduate online tests explains what to expect.
• Places can go by location or team. Teach First’s application form shows how your subject and location choices match current availability, and Aldi says its spaces go very quickly in the autumn.
• Some employers limit how often you can apply. PwC lets you apply to only one of its graduate programmes each recruitment year, so choose carefully and make that application your best.

A sensible plan is to have your first-choice applications in by late October or early November, then keep applying to others through the winter.

When do summer internships and spring insight programmes open?#

Internships and insight programmes run on a similar calendar to graduate schemes, but a year or two earlier in your degree.

Spring insight programmes (spring weeks). Warwick Business School describes these as week-long taster experiences in the Easter holidays, usually for students in the first year of a three-year course or the second year of a four-year course. They are most common in finance and accountancy. Applications open in late August or early September, and most close in December or early January. Some employers use them to spot talent early and may offer a summer internship at the end.

Summer internships. These are usually paid, last 4 to 12 weeks, and are aimed at students in their penultimate year (the second year of a three-year course or the third year of a four-year course), according to Warwick Business School. Prospects advises applying between September and December of the year before, notes that many organisations set deadlines between January and March while others have rolling deadlines, and says employers often recruit graduates from their interns.

If you are in your first or penultimate year, the autumn term is the time to act, not the spring.

What if you’ve missed the main graduate scheme deadlines?#

You still have options. Graduate schemes are only one way in.

• Look for schemes with later or rolling intakes. Prospects notes that some employers recruit throughout the year as vacancies come up, and that some programmes have January intakes. Aldi, for example, says it recruits all year round.
• Apply for graduate jobs, not just schemes. Prospects points out that schemes are run mainly by larger employers that hire a group of graduates each year, while a graduate job is a standard entry-level role that is permanent from the start. Search for titles such as junior, assistant, trainee or associate as well as “graduate”, and include smaller employers that do not run schemes at all.
• Keep using your university careers service. Many services support graduates for a set time after they leave. The University of Bristol, for example, offers support for up to three years after you finish, wherever you are in the world.
• Get ready for the next cycle. If a particular scheme matters to you, use the months before it reopens to build relevant experience, then apply as soon as it opens next autumn.

What can you do this week?#

• List 10 to 15 employers you are interested in, and note on each one’s own careers page whether applications are open, closing dates, and the minimum degree grade.
• Register your interest with any employer whose applications have not opened yet.
• Put every closing date in your calendar, then set your own target two or three weeks earlier.
• Update your CV and draft answers to common questions, such as “Why this role?” and “Why this organisation?”, so each application takes less time.
• Practise online tests now, before invitations start arriving in October.
